Boosting Livelihoods: PhilFIDA's Abaca Training Initiative in Negros Oriental

The Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA), in partnership with the Local Government Unit of Sta. Catalina, Negros Oriental, recently organized a one-day Livelihood Training on Abaca Production, Classification, and Grading in Negros Oriental. Mr. Jose Dary Locsin TAU Head of RO VII led the event aimed to enhance farmers' abaca farming practices. Thirty-eight (38) enthusiastic farmers from the Tamlang Valley Integrated Farm Workers Association participated, demonstrating their eagerness to improve agricultural techniques.

On March 14-15, 2024, the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority – Regional Satellite Office VI conducted the Abaca Production Technology Training in Brgy. Daan Sur, Tapaz, Capiz, in collaboration with the Municipal Social Welfare Office (MSWO) and the Municipal Agriculture Office (MAO). With the participation of key representatives like Helen Fariñas from MSWO and Gregorio Gasis from MAO, the event aimed to empower local abaca farmers with essential skills and knowledge on abaca production. The training, facilitated by industry experts from RSO VI such as Ms. Valentina P. Macahilo and Mr. Narlito Celso E. Ocayo, attracted 42 abaca farmers from upland barangays, including members of the indigenous peoples’ community known as the “Panay Bukidnon.”

In light of the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority’s (PhilFIDA) dedicated commitment to providing the eagerly anticipated Bt Cotton technology to our cotton farmers—a technology proven to double production and exhibit resistance to notorious bollworm—a significant meeting transpired on March 4, 2024 between Dr. Satish K. Raina, Director of Global Transgenes and Chief Advisor at Nath Bio-genes from India and the Department of Agriculture (DA) and PhilFIDA officials, led by DA Assistant Secretary for Consumer Affairs and Legislative Affairs and Department Legislative Liaison Officer (DLLO) Atty. Genevieve Velicaria-Guevarra and PhilFIDA, OIC, Executive Director (ED) Evelyn B. Cagasan. Present at the meeting were also Deputy ED Ramil B. Barcelona, Cotton Project Manager Dr. Leny C. Galvez, TAD OIC Manolito F. Apalla, and one of the pioneers of Bt Cotton, Ms. Ma. Magdalena C. Damo.

PhilFIDA Initiates Successful Cotton Project Harvesting and Expansion in Negros Oriental, Region VII

The PhilFIDA Regional Office VII successfully completed the cultivation and harvesting of cotton in the expansion area of Brgy. Planas, Guihulngan, Negros Oriental on January 26, 2024. A substantial portion of the farms has reached harvestable maturity since planting began in the 2nd week of September 2023. However, this project is strategically focused, representing an expansion into new territories for this year's implementation.
