PhilFIDA Distributes 3-in-1 Modified Abaca Stripping Knife (MASK) in Virac, Catanduanes

Date Posted 03 June 2024

Catanduanes, Philippines - As part of the 8th Abaca Festival celebration, the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA) distributed two hundred (200) 3-in-1 Modified Abaca Stripping Knives (MASK) to local abaca farmers in Catanduanes.

These MASKs feature interchangeable serrations, allowing users to choose the appropriate blade depending on their desired fiber grade (S2, I, G, H, and JK). This innovation aims to produce more uniform and high-quality abaca fibers.

The distribution ceremony took place on May 30, 2024, at the Catanduanes Convention Center in Virac, Catanduanes. PhilFIDA representatives, including OIC Regional Director Mary Anne R. Molina, Technical Assistance Unit Head Marlon F. Rebancos, Regional Agricultural and Biosystem Engineer Melanie B. Patricio, and Provincial Fiber Officer Roberto B. Lusuegro, along with other RO V personnel, played a pivotal role in the distribution. To ensure the MASKs' full potential will be utilized by the beneficiaries, comprehensive training was conducted to provide them with the necessary skills to excel in fiber grading and classification.

Moreover, the success of this initiative would not have been possible without the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders, including the Provincial Agricultural Services Office (PASO), led by Provincial Agriculturist Ace William Tria. During the ceremonial distribution, Governor Hon. Joseph C. Cua and Provincial Board Member Hon. Edwin Tanael underscored the importance placed on empowering Catanduanes' abaca farmers.

The distribution of MASK is a testament to PhilFIDA's commitment to supporting the abaca industry in Catanduanes, a major producer of this versatile fiber. By equipping farmers with this new technology, PhilFIDA hopes to empower them to produce higher fiber grades and contribute to the economic growth of the province.
