The Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA) recently hosted a specialized training session focused on advancing cotton production techniques, with emphasis on Insect Resistance Management (IRM) in Bt Cotton which took place at the PhilFIDA Research Center I in Batac, Ilocos Norte on April 1-5, 2024. Significantly, OIC-Executive Director Evelyn B. The core objective of the training was to familiarize and update the participants with Recommended Cotton Production Technology on Bt Cotton, specifically addressing effective insect resistance management in Bt cotton, in preparation for its commercial planting phase. Further, the training served as venue for the exchange of ideas and experience for the four regions who had initially planted Bt cotton.

The training curriculum encompassed a wide array of essential topics for proficient cotton production management. Starting with an overview of the cotton industry, discussions progressed to various management practices, detailed examinations of cotton pests and their control measures, and fundamental techniques for harvesting and post-harvest operations. To enhance learning, participants engaged in field-based insect monitoring exercises, followed by group presentations of their findings. The culmination involved a firsthand visit to Bt cotton production areas, providing insights into the application of the discussed topics and techniques.
