Weaving Hope, Empowering Women, and Creating New Livelihood Opportunities with Sisal Fiber in Siquijor

Date Posted 25 September 2023

With support from the Local Government Unit (LGU) in Siquijor, the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA) Regional Office VII successfully conducted a Training on Sisal Fiber Scrunch Making on August 30-31, 2023, in Siquijor. The training drew participation from 15 individuals, including representatives from DENR-Siquijor, the Provincial Agriculture Office, and DTI-Siquijor. Mayor Roselyn Asok of Maria, Siquijor, and PhilFIDA OIC Joseph S. Salas also graced the training with their presence.

Siquijor, renowned for its lush natural beauty, was once abundant in Sisal and Maguey plants. However, over time, the population of these plants dwindled as they faced challenges in generating economic benefits, primarily due to a lack of market demand beyond rope production. Recognizing this issue, the training aimed to revive and create new opportunities by exploring alternative uses of these fibers, such as producing a variety of products like bags, mats, and handicrafts.

Moreover, this training sought to equip members of the women's association with the skills and knowledge necessary to engage in a fiber-based livelihood project. This newfound expertise would not only empower them but also provide a means to augment their family income.

PhilFIDA remains committed to taking proactive steps to fulfill its mission of bringing Siquijor's unique products to the global market. Through initiatives like the Sisal Fiber Scrunch Making training, the agency strives to weave hope, empower women, and create fresh livelihood opportunities in Siquijor, thereby contributing to the sustainable development of the region
