PhilFIDA-FUTD Participates in the 2023 Philippine Chemistry Congress: Recognizing the Importance of Chemistry in Fiber Industry Development

Date Posted August 2023

The Philippine Chemistry Congress is an annual gathering of chemists, chemical technicians, and other professionals in the field. It features plenary and keynote lectures delivered by esteemed speakers covering chemistry and allied sciences.

Mr. Mark Kevin C. Sapida and Ms. Jubille Mae I. Cipriano, registered chemists from the Fiber Utilization and Technology Division (FUTD), attended the 37th Philippine Chemistry Congress with the theme "Chemistry for Agriculture 4.0 and Food Security," held at the SMX Convention Center in Bacolod City on July 26-28, 2023. The congress was organized by the National and Bacolod Chapters of Integrated Chemists of the Philippines (ICP), in partnership with the Philippine Federation of Chemistry Societies, Inc (PFCS). Professionals from academia, research and development institutions, and industries graced the event.

During the congress, Mr. Sapida and Ms. Cipriano presented their poster on the recently completed FUTD studies entitled "Characterization of Physical, Morphological, and Chemical Properties and SEM Imaging with Elemental Analysis of Different Abaca Varieties from Different Locations in the Philippines" and "Identification of Phytochemicals from Abaca Extraction Waste Extracts as Antifungal Agents Against Disease-Infecting Abaca."

The participants gained valuable insights into current and future trends in chemistry, explored by researchers from all corners of the country. This information will be instrumental in formulating new studies that utilize natural plant fibers, thus contributing to the growth and development of the country's fiber industry. Additionally, the Congress provided prospects in establishing collaborations, particularly with UPLB in bioethanol and abaca extraction, and for the identification of suppliers who can support the laboratory needs, ensuring its continuous operations.

Participation in the Philippine Chemistry Congress enhances professional insights, fosters collaborations, and arises potential advancements in Chemistry and Fiber Industry Development in the Philippines.
