Advancing Democracy Through Science and Technology: Key Takeaway from NAST PHL's 45th Annual Scientific Meeting

The Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA) joined the National Academy of Science and Technology Philippines (NAST PHL) in its 45th Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) on July 12 - 13, 2023, with the theme "Agham at Teknolohiya para sa Demokrasya" (Science and Technology for Democracy). The ASM witnessed the convergence of national scientists, academicians, and foreign delegates for in-depth discussions at The Manila Hotel in Ermita, Manila, as well as online participation via the Zoom platform.
From agrarian reform to AI's impact on education, this ASM brought cutting-edge insights to empower a better tomorrow. ASM 2023 brought experts together to discuss crucial topics like promoting agricultural development, equal access to quality education, equitable water management, health equity, and AI's role in education. The conference also highlighted research on poverty programs, age-related diseases, river rehabilitation, and hypertension predictors.
Notably, the meeting placed a significant focus on health and healthcare, acknowledging their relevance in light of the pandemic's challenges. Importance of renewable energy sources – solar, hydro, wind, and geothermal power – were also highlighted. Another critical viewpoint expressed during the meeting was the consideration of tertiary education for all citizens. As we move further into the digital age, access to computers and the internet has become essential for education. Accordingly, the importance of expanding the participation of PhilFIDA in the NAST PHL meetings will emphasize inclusivity to keep individuals informed and updated about science and technology-related issues (STIs), fostering a more informed and engaged workforce.
