Reviving Tradition: PhilFIDA Awards 3.1 Million Worth Sericulture Project to LGU Claveria, Cagayan

In pursuit of reviving the rich tradition of sericulture in the country, a momentous turnover ceremony was held on July 13, 2023, in Brgy. Culao, Claveria, Cagayan. The event marked a significant milestone in the region's silk industry and showcased the dedication of key stakeholders in advancing this traditional craft.
Led by the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA), the ceremony brought together the Bonnieville Farmers Association, government officials from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)-Region II, and MLGU Claveria. The collective aim was to promote economic empowerment among local farmers by fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange.
The Claveria Silk Project, worth Php 3.1 million aimed to develop a 2-hectare farmland and sericulture training center in Barangay Culao. It included mulberry plantations, rearing houses, a cocoon processing center, and a silk processing and weaving center. With sixty-six farmers engaged in sericulture, the project promises to uplift the community and preserve traditional craftsmanship.
The success of the Claveria Silk Project is a testament to the resilience and ingenuity of the local community. By embracing sustainable practices and promoting sericulture as a hallmark product of the region, Claveria aims to become a hub of silk production, drawing both local and international tourists.
Furthermore, PhilFIDA's initiatives in cultivating abaca within Claveria add to the region's economic growth and environmental sustainability. The LGU's support in incorporating abaca planting requirements into the process of obtaining a marriage license showcases their commitment to community development and livelihood opportunities.
