Collaborative efforts between the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA) RO VII and the LGU of Badian marked a significant milestone in revitalizing the local banig industry in the province of Cebu. On April 30, 2024, in the Municipality of Badian, Cebu, OIC-Regional Director Joseph S. Salas of PhilFIDA Regional Office VII, alongside PhilFIDA representatives from the Fiber Utilization and Technology Division (FUTD), Ms. Concepcion Jocson and Engr. Pepito Soriano III, spearheaded a visit to the municipality in response to Mayor Carmensita L. Lumain’s request for the agency’s intervention and technical support. Badian, renowned for its banig craftsmanship, faces challenges, ranging from dyeing techniques to product development and marketing strategies that hinder its full potential despite its cultural and economic significance.
A Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with the Banig Weavers of Badian unearthed crucial needs within the banig community, spanning from refining dyeing techniques to enhancing marketing strategies. PhilFIDA’s pledge to adapt slicing technology for pandan leaves and commitment to skill-building workshops showcased the proactive approach to addressing these challenges. Such initiatives not only promise to streamline production processes but also empower local weavers with advanced techniques.
As optimism pervades the horizon, fueled by collaborative efforts and a collective vision for prosperity, Badian’s banig industry stands ready for a resurgence. This partnership not only ensures economic vitality but also safeguards the rich heritage that defines Badian’s identity.
