On June 21, 2024, the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority Regional Office X (PhilFIDA RO X) hosted its annual stakeholders’ forum, Abakausapan 2024, at The Veranda in Casisang, Malaybalay City, Bukidnon. This event aimed to provide stakeholders with updates and insights into recent developments within the fiber industry, drawing participation from 41 individuals representing farmer groups, local government units (LGUs), traders, processors, and PhilFIDA RO X personnel.
Mr. Ryan R. Fuentes, Planning Officer II, began the forum by presenting a comprehensive overview of the regional office’s performance for the FY 2023, detailing achievements and outlining planned activities and targets for the current year. Emphasizing the agency’s limitations in providing production and technical support, Mr. Fuentes balanced stakeholders’ expectations with realistic deliverables. Ms. Percy S. Salugsugan, Technical Assistance Unit Head, followed with a presentation on the versatility of abaca fiber, showcasing its wide array of applications and inspiring participants with the potential within abaca farming.
Addressing fiber quality challenges, Engr. Eugene N. Galela, OIC Regional Director, discussed the importance of compliance with the Philippine National Standards for Fiber Classification and Grading, highlighting malpractices in harvesting that threaten fiber quality. To boost stakeholder confidence, Ms. Geraldine F. Giner, Fiber Procurement Manager at NPI, provided updates on the abaca value chain’s market segment. Despite a significant reduction in pulp export volume in 2023, she expressed optimism that the recent merger of Berry and Glatfelter would create new opportunities for abaca fiber applications.
The forum concluded with an open discussion, where participants shared insights and raised concerns. Key issues included government support for the abaca industry, assistance for harvesting large abaca farms, and solutions for low bargaining power among farmers. PhilFIDA RO X and LGUs responded with practical advice and commitments to support stakeholders, emphasizing the need for collaboration and compliance to safeguard the industry’s future. Abakausapan 2024 successfully provided valuable updates and engaged stakeholders in addressing challenges, underscoring the importance of a united approach to advancing the fiber industry.
