PhilFIDA Region Office VIII (PhilFIDA RO VIII), in collaboration with the local government of Bontoc, Southern Leyte, successfully conducted a two-day training on September 18-19, 2024, in Barangays Hilaan and San Vicente. The event focused on the operation and maintenance of the Modified Abaca Stripping Knife (MASK) and fiber grading and classification. Fifty (50) abaca farmers from various barangays participated, along with members of the Barangay Council. Mr. Ariel C. Cinco and Engr. Kristelle Ahn C. Suñer served as resource speakers, with Ms. Geralyn D. Entuna, PhilFIDA Field Technician for Southern Leyte, and Mr. Fernando Ongy, Agricultural Technologist of the Municipal Agricultural Services Office (MagSO), facilitating the event.
The primary goal of the training was to equip abaca farmers with the necessary skills for the proper installation, use, and maintenance of the MASK, a tool designed to enhance the quality of hand-stripped abaca fibers. Known for being safe, easy to operate, and gender-inclusive, the MASK ensures improved fiber production practices. The sessions also focused on fiber grading and classification, with the aim of helping farmers produce higher-grade abaca fibers to meet growing global demand for premium-quality products.
Following the detailed discussions and hands-on demonstrations, the farmers were provided with MASK units, enabling them to apply their new knowledge and improve both productivity and fiber quality in their respective communities. This initiative is part of PhilFIDA’s ongoing efforts to support the local abaca industry and enhance the livelihood of abaca farmers.
