The Fibercrops Stakeholders’ Forum, held at the Provincial Nursery Conference Hall in Brgy. Reyes, Banga, South Cotabato, brought together key players from the abaca, cotton, and pineapple industries in Region XII. In collaboration with the Provincial Local Government Unit (PLGU) of South Cotabato, the event attracted 28 abaca farmers, traders, Grading Baling Establishments (GBEs), and cooperative managers. The forum aimed to address challenges faced by the region’s fiber crops while promoting sustainability and fostering collaboration among farmers, traders, and local government units.

Discussions centered on issues such as the proliferation of spurious “Daratex” fibers and the impact of global market trends, including rising shipping costs and decreased demand due to international conflicts. Local traders and farmers highlighted concerns about fiber classification and trading, with solutions aimed at improving fiber quality and ensuring fair trading practices. The LGU of Lake Sebu took action by passing a resolution to eradicate Daratex fibers, while GBEs assured farmers of their continued support and encouraged the production of high-quality fibers.

Additionally, PhilFIDA introduced the Loop Mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) equipment to help address abaca diseases prevalent in the region, sparking interest among participants. The forum not only provided insights into industry challenges but also strengthened relationships among stakeholders, paving the way for enhanced collaboration and industry growth in South Cotabato and beyond.
