The Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA) – Research Division, in collaboration with PhilFIDA Regional Office XI, conducted a training program titled “Hands-on Technology Transfer on Abaca Good Agricultural Practices” (GAP) on August 6-7, 2024, at DRFES, Bago Oshiro, Tugbok District, Davao City. Led by Dr. Leny T. Galvez and her team, the event brought together farmers, agricultural experts, SUCs, and LGUs to provide a comprehensive, hands-on experience in the latest techniques and best practices for abaca cultivation. The program emphasized the importance of GAP in improving crop quality and yield, with participants engaging in interactive sessions that included live demonstrations and practical activities.
The first day focused on educating participants about abaca diseases and introducing modern technologies for easier and faster disease diagnosis. The use of the Abaca Disease App (AbaDDapp) and the LAMPara Kit were key highlights, equipping farmers with digital tools for effective disease management. The second day emphasized hands-on training, where participants applied what they learned, particularly in the use of the LAMPara Kit and macropropagation techniques, crucial for the rapid multiplication of healthy, disease-free abaca plants.
The training concluded with the distribution of the LAMPara Kit to selected participants, empowering them with the necessary tools to implement the GAP techniques on their farms. This event underscores PhilFIDA’s commitment to advancing the abaca industry by equipping farmers with the knowledge and tools needed for sustainable cultivation practices.
