In line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to advance research, production, and education in the fiber sector while capitalizing on new growth opportunities, the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority Regional Office V (PhilFIDA-RO V), in partnership with the Local Government Unit of Viga and other stakeholders, spearheaded a Project Briefing cum Technical Training on the Abaca Disease Management Program (ADMP) in Viga, Catanduanes.
This initiative is also aligned with the Department of Agriculture’s commitment under the leadership of Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr., to promote sustainable and competitive agricultural practices across the country.
Targeting abaca farmers from Sagrada and P. Vera Summit—areas severely affected by persistent pests and diseases—the training aimed to reduce the incidence of abaca diseases in plantations to below 5%. The ADMP supports promoting sustainable, eco-friendly, and biodegradable fiber production, reinforcing the importance of resilient and climate-smart agricultural systems.
The activity featured technical lectures and practical, hands-on demonstrations led by PhilFIDA experts. Participants were equipped with knowledge on how to identify abaca disease vectors, understand transmission patterns, and apply science-based disease management strategies. The field demonstration enabled farmers to practice eradication techniques following the ADMP protocol, ensuring the application of theoretical knowledge through active participation.
This collaborative effort among PhilFIDA, the LGU of Viga, and the local farming community underscores a shared vision of revitalizing the abaca industry in Catanduanes. By empowering farmers with critical knowledge and practical skills, the ADMP is set to improve crop productivity, strengthen sustainable farming practices, and contribute meaningfully to the economic growth of the province.
