The Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority Regional Office V (PhilFIDA-RO V), headed by OIC-Regional Director Mary Anne R. Molina, through the Provincial Office of Camarines Sur, led by Ms. Jenny Ann O. Remolar, recently launched a Climate-Smart Farmers’ Field School (CSFFS) on Abaca Production in Balaynan, Goa, Camarines Sur. This initiative was a collaboration between PhilFIDA and the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Goa through its Municipal Agriculture Office. The participants are drawn from the beneficiaries of the Abaca Production Under Coconut Areas Project, maximizing their land and ensuring that this activity directly benefits those already engaged in or committed to abaca farming. The purpose of this project was to unite farmers to learn new abaca farming technologies and collaboratively address environmental challenges and community issues through collective inquiry and adaptation.
This will have 24 sessions that will provide comprehensive training on various aspects of abaca farming, including climate-resilient techniques, improved planting methods, pest and disease management, and post-harvest handling. Participants will learn practical, hands-on skills to increase their productivity and income while minimizing environmental impact.
PhilFIDA remains committed to strengthening the abaca industry and empowering farmers to adapt to the challenges of a changing climate. The partnership with LGU-Goa demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainable agricultural development within the municipality. By fostering collaboration and providing crucial training, this CSFFS promises to significantly benefit abaca farmers in Balaynan and contribute to the overall growth of the abaca industry in the province. Through this activity, it is expected to lead to increasing abaca yields, improved livelihoods of farmers, and a more sustainable approach to abaca cultivation.
