Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA) Executive Director Arnold “Ali” I. Atienza with OIC-Regional Director Mary Anne Molina, explored Natural Carpet Industry (NCI) in Sumlang, Albay. This engagement aimed to strengthen partnerships with abaca processors and explore innovative products that enhance the abaca value chain. Ms. Mary Faith Barrameda, NCI’s focal person for abaca products, guided the team through the Sumlang Lake Artisan Village, where they witnessed an actual demonstration of abaca stripping using a “bacnis” tuxy. ED Ali Atienza took part in rug-making and table runner weaving, experiencing firsthand the craftsmanship behind these products.

The team later visited NCI’s souvenir shop along Sumlang Lake, showcasing a diverse range of abaca products, including lamps, carpets, placemats, bags, and table runners. A tour of the NCI factory provided a closer look at abaca-made rugs and furniture, with insights into the time-intensive production process—taking up to two months for a complete set of furniture.

PhilFIDA remains committed to supporting abaca processors like NCI by fostering innovation, strengthening partnerships, and empowering local artisans in the industry.
