Pursuant to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to advance fiber sector research, production, and education while seizing new growth opportunities, PhilFIDA Executive Director Arnold “Ali” I. Atienza visited Dalaguete, where he engaged with local government officials and fiber farmers to reinforce the agency’s commitment to the industry.

ED Ali Atienza’s visit began with a courtesy call on Mayor Ronald Allan Cesante. Their discussion centered on the ongoing programs related to fibercraft, highlighting the synergy between the local government unit (LGU) and PhilFIDA. Mayor Cesante emphasized the LGU’s continuous efforts to support fiber farmers and enhance their livelihoods through sustainable initiatives. In response, Director Atienza reassured the mayor of PhilFIDA’s commitment to implementing projects in Dalaguete, designed to improve farmers’ income and strengthen the fibercraft sector.

Following this productive meeting, ED Ali Atienza proceeded to Brgy. Sacsac, Dalaguete, where he had the opportunity to witness firsthand the fiber extraction process. Local farmers demonstrated how they extract fibers from salago branches and sisal using the multi-fiber decortication machine, an innovation developed by PhilFIDA and provided to the farmers’ association. This machine has significantly improved the efficiency and productivity of fiber extraction, benefiting the community’s economic prospects.

The visit was met with enthusiasm from the farmers, who expressed their gratitude for the continued government support. Many were honored to have a high-ranking official personally visit their barangay, reinforcing the importance of their work and the government’s dedication to sustaining the fibercraft industry.

Promoting sustainable, eco-friendly, and biodegradable fiber production, this initiative aligns with the Department of Agriculture’s commitment under Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. to sustainable and competitive agricultural practices. By supporting the advancement of the Philippine fiber industry, PhilFIDA continues to ensure better opportunities and improved livelihoods for local farmers.
