PhilFIDA Executive Director Arnold “Ali” I. Atienza visited Sulci Handicraft Trading Inc., a PhilFIDA-registered processor in Carcar City, Cebu. Founded by Satomi Sekiya in 2010, Sulci Handicraft Trading empowers local women by teaching them crochet skills, enabling them to create high-quality handcrafted bags. The company introduced an innovative use of Raffia fibers, traditionally used for weaving, in crochet bag-making, providing sustainable livelihood opportunities to the community.
At the Sulci workshop, nearly fifty women work as crocheters, producing durable and lightweight Raffia fiber bags that are now sold internationally, including in Japan. The company has also expanded its outreach by training women inmates at Carcar City prison, giving them a chance to earn and support their families. The use of Raffia, sourced from the Buri palm tree, highlights the company’s commitment to sustainability and eco-friendly craftsmanship.
During his visit, Director Atienza expressed admiration for the artisans’ skills and the positive impact of Sulci Handicraft Trading on the local community. He commended the company for its role in empowering women and promoting Filipino craftsmanship on the global stage. Sulci’s dedication to social impact and sustainability continues to uplift communities while showcasing the rich potential of locally sourced materials.
