Pursuant to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to advance fiber sector research, production, and education while seizing new growth opportunities, Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA) Executive Director Arnold “Ali” I. Atienza led a visit to the pineapple fiber production farm in Balete, Aklan.

During the visit, the team observed the abundant yields of pineapple leaves ready for harvest and fiber extraction. They witnessed firsthand the manual and traditional process of extracting and drying pineapple fiber, gaining a deeper appreciation for the meticulous and labor-intensive craft. This delicate process requires patience, precision, and expertise to ensure the production of high-quality fibers essential for weaving piña textiles.

Following the farm visit, PhilFIDA explored Raquel’s Piña Cloth Products and Bandiola Piña Weaving in Balete and the Handicrafts of Aklan Multipurpose Cooperative (HAMPCO) in Kalibo. These weaving centers uphold Aklan’s rich fiber heritage while continuously innovating to meet the growing demand for sustainable, eco-friendly, and biodegradable textiles.
Local artisans showcased various eco-textile products, featuring piña fiber blended with silk, abaca, and cotton, alongside pure piña fabric. Their craftsmanship transforms delicate fibers into exquisite handwoven textiles and barongs, further strengthening the province’s reputation as a premier hub for high-quality handwoven fabrics.

Aligned with the Department of Agriculture’s mission under the leadership of Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr., to enhance agricultural productivity and sustainability, PhilFIDA continues to strengthen the country’s fiber industry. By supporting fiber producers and artisans, the agency ensures the advancement of sustainable and biodegradable textile production, contributing to economic growth and environmental responsibility.
