PhilFIDA Executive Director, Arnold “Ali” I. Atienza, recently visited the Sto. Rosario Multi-Purpose Cooperative in Pandan, Antique, where he observed the remarkable craftsmanship of local bariw weavers. The visit highlighted the skill and dedication of artisans who transform bariw leaves into exquisite handicrafts, including mats, bags, and other traditional products.
During his visit, ED Atienza witnessed firsthand the intricate weaving techniques passed down through generations. The artisans meticulously craft their products with precision and creativity, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Pandan’s weaving tradition.
Pursuant to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to advance fiber sector research, production, and education while seizing new growth opportunities, ED Atienza pledged his support in promoting the weavers’ work. He emphasized the importance of preserving traditional crafts while also exploring new opportunities for market expansion and economic sustainability by promoting sustainable, eco-friendly, and biodegradable fiber production.
Aligned with the Department of Agriculture’s commitment under the leadership of Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr., for sustainable and competitive agricultural practices, this initiative supports the advancement of the Philippine fiber industry. By empowering local weavers and integrating resilient technologies and practices, efforts like these strengthen the country’s natural fiber production and handicraft sector.
