The Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority Regional Office VII (PhilFIDA RO VII) conducted its week-long Basic Handloom Weaving Training, at Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) in Dumaguete City. The activity was conducted in partnership with the Negros Oriental Fiber Industry Alliance (NORFIA), composed of various national and local agencies including Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA), Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA), Foundation University, and Negros Oriental State University. Participants came from several LGUs and institutions, highlighting local interest in weaving as a sustainable source of livelihood and a means to preserve cultural heritage.
The training reflects the priorities of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Department of Agriculture’s leadership to empower rural communities through inclusive programs that blend tradition with innovation. PhilFIDA Executive Director Arnold “Ali” I. Atienza continues to promote initiatives that foster economic opportunities while supporting local industries. The activity offered both practical skills and inspiration, further amplified by the keynote message of sustainable fashion advocate Ms. Jessica Ouano Durano of Kinabuhi. She encouraged participants, especially women, to embrace the art of weaving using sustainable materials, not only to support the environment but also to build meaningful relationships with what they wear.
Through the commitment of the PhilFIDA Regional Office VII led by OIC-Regional Director Joseph S. Salas, and the support of partner agencies and academic institutions, the training demonstrated the strong potential of inter-agency collaboration. It also underscored the value of fiber-based industries in achieving community development goals rooted in sustainability, culture, and self-reliance.
