Baguio City-June 5, 2025
A training on the basic operation and maintenance of the Abaca Spindle Stripping Machine was successfully conducted on June 5, 2025, at the Baguio Animal Breeding and Research Center (BABRC) in Purok I, Dontogan, Baguio City. The activity was facilitated by personnel from the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority – Regional Office I (PhilFIDA RO I), in collaboration with representatives from the machine supplier, Universal Commercial Corporation (UCC).

The training was attended by a total of 18 abaca farmers coming from three different municipalities:

Natonin, Mountain Province: 12 farmers, accompanied by Hon. Mayor Jose T. Agagon.

Claveria, Cagayan: 2 farmers, accompanied by Engr. Joel Apostol from the Office of the Municipal Agriculturist.

Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya: 2 farmers.

The training aimed to familiarize the farmer-beneficiaries with the proper use, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the spindle stripping machine to ensure its longevity and efficient operation.

As part of the project, nine (9) units of Abaca Spindle Stripping Machines were delivered to the PhilFIDA RO I office in Barangay Dontogan, Baguio City for initial testing and inspection. After completion of quality checks, the machines will be distributed to the identified farmer-beneficiaries from the three municipalities. These machines are expected to significantly ease the labor-intensive process of abaca fiber extraction, improving productivity and efficiency in abaca production.

The successful conduct of the training and the delivery of the machines were made possible through the strong leadership and guidance of PhilFIDA Executive Director Arnold “Ali” I. Atienza, whose commitment to supporting abaca farmers continues to drive the agency’s programs forward.
