The Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority Regional Office V, led by OIC-Regional Director, Mary Anne R. Molina, through the Provincial Fiber Officer of Catanduanes, Mr. Roberto B. Lusuegro, conducted a livelihood training on Abaca Twine and Bag Making in Genitligan, Baras, Catanduanes. This transformative training was participated in by twenty-three (23) members of the Genitligan Abaca Farmers Association.

This crucial initiative was in collaboration with the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Baras, aimed to empower farmers by enhancing their skills and increasing their income-generating potential. The three-day training equipped participants with the knowledge and practical skills necessary to process their abaca fiber into high-value products. Instead of simply selling raw fiber, farmers learned techniques to transform their harvest into marketable twine and bags, significantly increasing their profits. The training covered a comprehensive range of topics, from fiber preparation, intricacies of twine and bag making, and up to quality control. Participants gained hands-on experience, mastering essential techniques under the guidance of PhilFIDA and local artisans from Albay.

The project represents a significant step towards sustainable economic development in Baras. By adding value to their abaca fiber production, farmers can improve their livelihoods and contribute to the growth of the local economy. The LGU-Baras’s support underscores its commitment to empowering its agricultural sector and providing economic opportunities for abaca farmers. The success of this training program serves as a model for other communities seeking to develop sustainable and income-generating activities based on locally available resources. The Genitligan Abaca Farmers Association’s new skills will improve their farming, families, as well as the economy in Baras, Catanduanes.
