The Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority Regional Office V (PhilFIDA-ROV) participated in the conduct of hands-on training on Abaca Twine Making and Bleaching at Purok 6, Alimsog, Sto. Domingo, Albay in response to the request of the P-6 Abaca Weaving SLP Association. The training was organized with the support of the LGU-Sto. Domingo through the Municipal Agriculturist Office, led by Mr. Gino B. Gregorio, and aimed to enhance the livelihood skills of local abaca weavers. Fifteen members (15) of the association participated, eager to gain practical knowledge in processing abaca fiber into finished products.

Guided by experts from PhilFIDA and local artisans, the training featured technical demonstrations on two twine types— the “asero” twine, primarily used by the organization for making macramé bags and baskets and the “2-ply” twine which is smaller in diameter than the “asero” —along with bleaching methods to prepare fiber for weaving. The training was attended by Engr. Brent Baltazar R. Marbella, Provincial Fiber Officer of Albay, along with Mr. Jason G. Regalado, the technical staff assigned to Sto. Domingo. It was further supported by Ms. Virginia N. Roranes, the Livelihood Training Coordinator from the Regional Office, Mrs. Marieta Balaguer, abaca twine maker from Malilipot, Albay and Mr. Gino B. Gregorio, Municipal Agricultural Services Officer.

The three-day activity provided participants with valuable experience in producing quality abaca twine, which they can use for making macramé bags and baskets. The training concluded with a showcase of the participants’ work, with trainers offering feedback and encouragement. With enhanced skills and knowledge, the association members are now better equipped to improve their craft and boost their income through abaca-based livelihood opportunities.
