The Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA) Regional Office VII – Siquijor Provincial Office conducted a one-day LGU-Led Salago and Sisal Production Technology Training on April 29, 2025, at Barangay Cangmangki, Enrique Villanueva, Siquijor. Led by Ms. Fritzie Concepcion, Provincial Fiber Officer for Siquijor, the activity aimed to introduce key technologies in salago and sisal production, promote biodiversity conservation and climate change awareness, and equip farmers with knowledge on how to generate income from these fibercrops. The event was held in coordination with the LGU of Enrique Villanueva, with support from PhilFIDA VII, Barangay Cangmangki, and DENR-Siquijor.
Participants included members of the Cangmangki Agro-Forestry Association (CAFA) and Canlasog Samahang Mag-uuma Association (CASAMA), representing the municipalities of Enrique Villanueva and Larena. The event also gathered support from several allied agencies, including the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Barangay Officials of Cangmangki, and the Office of the Municipal Agriculturist (OMA)–Enrique Villanueva.
Highlighting the event was a comprehensive session led by Mr. Lionel J. Abella, Provincial Fiber Officer of Cebu Province, who served as the resource speaker. Mr. Abella discussed in detail the cultural management practices of salago and sisal, including planting techniques, maintenance, and fiber extraction methods. A hands-on demonstration allowed each participant to try fiber extraction of salago, reinforcing practical learning.
This initiative is part of PhilFIDA’s broader commitment to empowering rural communities, promoting sustainable fibercrop farming, and enhancing the livelihood of Filipino farmers across the country.
