Pursuant to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to advance fiber sector research, production, and education while seizing new growth opportunities, PhilFIDA continues to strengthen its commitment to industry and academic collaboration. In line with this, PhilFIDA with Executive Director Arnold “Ali” Atienza and OIC-Regional Director Mary Anne Molina visited Catanduanes State University (CatSU) and paid a courtesy call to OIC-President Dr. Roberto Barba. During the visit, a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was signed for the Student Internship Program (SIP) and Apprenticeship for students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Biology. This initiative, supported by Vicente G. Padilla, Dean of the College of Science, Ma. Luz A. Floralde, Chairman of the Department of Natural Sciences, and Renee Daisy J. Avila, Instructor III, aim to equip students with hands-on experience in fiber research and development.

Aligned with the Department of Agriculture’s commitment under the leadership of Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. for sustainable and competitive agricultural practices, discussions focused on strengthening the abaca industry in the province. A key priority was ensuring the sustainability of abaca farming through collaborative efforts between PhilFIDA and CatSU to support farmers’ livelihoods. These initiatives also emphasize promoting sustainable, eco-friendly, and biodegradable fiber production while fostering research, innovation, and capacity-building programs to enhance industry resilience.

This collaboration underscores PhilFIDA’s dedication to advancing the fiber industry through strategic partnerships with academic institutions. By working closely with CatSU, PhilFIDA aims to bridge education and industry needs, ensuring a sustainable future for both students and abaca farmers across the province while contributing to national efforts in sustainable fiber sector growth.
