Pursuant to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to advance fiber sector research, production, and education while seizing new growth opportunities, the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA) Regional Office VII with OIC-Regional Director Joseph Salas spearheaded the ceremonial harvesting of a 1-hectare pilot organic cotton farm in Bayawan City, Negros Oriental. This demonstration farm was established following the request of PCAF Chair Mike Claparols to showcase the viability of organic farming methods for cotton production. It was joined by key figures including Technical Assistance Unit Head Mr. Jose Dary Locsin, Planning Officer Gilbert Mayores, Negros Oriental Provincial Fiber Officer Nena Locsin, and Mr. William Yaeso, Senior Agriculturist from the Bayawan City Agriculture Office. Members of the Nangka Farmers Association, led by President Jose Gela, also participated in the event.
Aligned with the Department of Agriculture’s commitment under the leadership of Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr., for sustainable and competitive agricultural practices, also saw the active involvement of PhilFIDA Field technician Mr. Cleiford Suante and Cotton personnel Mr. Jefferson Ignacio, Mr. Malvin Lado, and Ms. Faith Nicole Tizaon, who played vital roles in the development and monitoring of the project. Their contributions ensured the successful cultivation of organic cotton, reinforcing the potential of eco-friendly practices in enhancing productivity while preserving soil health and biodiversity.
With the success of this pilot farm, PhilFIDA hopes to encourage more farmers in the region to transition towards organic cotton farming, promoting sustainable, eco-friendly, and biodegradable fiber production. This initiative underscores the commitment of PhilFIDA and local agricultural stakeholders to environmentally responsible farming techniques that foster long-term growth and resilience in the fiber industry.
