The Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority Regional Office VII (PhilFIDA-RO VII) recently conducted a two-day Farmers’ Training on Macro-Propagation Technology for Abaca at Tamlang Valley in Brgy. Talalak, Santa Catalina, Negros Oriental on June 20-21, 2024. The initiative aimed to equip local farmers with essential knowledge and skills in abaca production, focusing on the fundamental techniques of producing high-quality abaca planting materials through macro-propagation. This training is the initial step in supporting the Tamlang Valley Sustainable Agriculture for Growth and Resiliency Project (TVSAGRP), which received approval from the Regional Development Council in September 2023.

Led by Mr. Jose Dary C. Locsin, Head of the Technical Assistance Unit, and supported by Fiber Development Officers Mr. Cleiford Suate and Mr. Jason Singuran, the training saw active participation from 21 members of the Tamlang Valley Integrated Farmers Association. Participants engaged in hands-on activities and practical demonstrations, covering various aspects of macro-propagation technology, including selecting high-quality abaca suckers, proper planting techniques, and effective pest and disease management strategies. The collaborative environment fostered a sense of community, allowing farmers to share experiences and best practices, which strengthened the local abaca industry.

PhilFIDA-RO VII’s efforts aim to enhance productivity and sustainability in the abaca industry, crucial for the economic growth and resilience of local communities. The agency will continue to provide abaca planting materials, technical assistance, and additional training sessions. By improving the quality and productivity of abaca crops, farmers can achieve higher yields and better incomes, contributing to the overall economic development of the region. The sustainable practices promoted during the training also align with environmental conservation goals, ensuring the long-term viability of abaca farming in Tamlang Valley.
