The Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA), under the leadership of Executive Director Arnold “Ali” I. Atienza, and through Regional Office X headed by OIC-Regional Director Eugene G. Galela, conducted a Livelihood Skills Training on Abaca Scrunch Making on June 23–25, 2026, in Barangay Besigan, Cagayan de Oro City.
The training benefited members of The Rising International Ministries (TRIM), led by Ms. Ma. Luisa N. Tumang, as part of the organization’s initiative to provide the community with a sustainable source of livelihood and additional income. Participants gained hands-on experience in crafting abaca scrunchies using Philippine abaca fiber, transforming this eco-friendly, biodegradable, and sustainable natural fiber into attractive, value-added products with market potential.
The initiative highlights PhilFIDA’s continuing commitment to strengthening rural livelihoods, promoting entrepreneurship, and expanding opportunities in the Philippine natural fiber industry. It also supports the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to improve the lives of Filipino communities through inclusive and sustainable development, in line with the guidance of Department of Agriculture under Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr.
