Senator Loren Legarda met with representatives from the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA) and the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) during the National Arts and Crafts Fair held on October 29, 2025, at the Megatrade Hall B, SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City. In attendance were Ms. Evelyn B. Cagasan, Chief of the Regulatory Division; Ms. Concepcion D. Jocson, OIC of the Fiber Utilization and Technology Division (FUTD); and Dr. Julius L. Leaño Jr., Director of DOST-PTRI.
The meeting focused on the current status of the country’s cotton industry, its ongoing development programs, and collaborative initiatives aimed at revitalizing local cotton production—a shared priority under the administration of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and the leadership of PhilFIDA Executive Director Arnold “Ali” I. Atienza, which underscores the importance of sustainable local industries and rural livelihood development.
Senator Legarda, a strong advocate of Filipino culture and sustainable livelihoods, reaffirmed her commitment to supporting local weavers and fiber producers. Her continued advocacy for cotton and abaca highlights the importance of strengthening the country’s fiber and textile sectors empowering rural communities and preserving the nation’s rich weaving heritage.
