The Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA), through the support and vision of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and the leadership of Executive Director Arnold “Ali” I. Atienza, conducted the Training on Eskohido Fiber and Tinagak Making with the Caatihan Manobo Abaca Grower’s Association (CAMAGA), Junction Upland Farmers Association (JUFA), and Bongcuan Community Integrated Farmers Association (BOCIFA) in Brgy. Caatihan, Boston, Davao Oriental.

A total of 38 participants, representing men, women, youth, and senior members actively took part in the two-day activity. The training was facilitated by Ms. Maribeth B. Masumpad, a licensed abaca trader from municipality of Caraga. The training focused on the proper selection and extraction of Eskohido fiber using the Laylay variety and its application in traditional Tinagak making. With the guidance of Barangay Captain Fredie Cotic and local stakeholders, the participants gained hands-on knowledge and practical skills that will help them maximize the value of their abaca produce. Their strong eagerness to learn reflected their determination to rebuild and strengthen their abaca-based livelihoods.

PhilFIDA remains committed to empowering abaca farmers and Indigenous Peoples communities by providing livelihood opportunities, skills training, and market-oriented interventions. This initiative not only supports the preservation of cultural heritage but also paves the way for sustainable income generation, uplifting the lives of farmers and their families in Davao Oriental.
