The Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA) recently conducted 12th to 15th sessions of the Climate-Smart Field School on Abaca in Brgy. Napuid, Pandan, Antique, as part of continuing effort to revive and strengthen the abaca industry in the province of Antique.
The activity featured organizational development where farmers formed their own association to better access government programs and support. Technical sessions introduced topics such as Abaca Macro-Propagation, an innovative method that produces more planting materials compared to traditional practices, as well as sustainable composting techniques that improve soil fertility. Participants also learned about crop insurance opportunities under government programs, ensuring better protection for their livelihood.

Hands-on session on Abaca Placemat Making Design was conducted to provide farmers with alternative source of income by adding value to their locally available high quality abaca fiber. By promoting both production and livelihood diversification, PhilFIDA equips farmers with the knowledge and skills to enhance productivity, resilience, and market competitiveness. Through this initiative, PhilFIDA underscores its commitment to empowering communities, promoting sustainable fiber development, and ensuring that the abaca industry continues to thrive.
