#HIBLATalks | In line with the vision of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to uplift the lives of farmers and promote inclusive agricultural development, the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA) engaged with the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Marihatag, Surigao del Sur to strengthen support for the abaca industry. The initiative also reflects the leadership of the Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. in advancing the fiber sector as part of the country’s agricultural modernization agenda.

PhilFIDA was led by Executive Director Arnold “Ali” I. Atienza, with key officials: Joel B. Barquilla, OIC of the Regulatory Division; Ms. Grace Aurora P. Pastores, OIC of the Planning Division; Ms. Concepcion D. Jocson, OIC of the Fiber Utilization and Technology Division; and Mr. Samuel M. Nacino Jr., OIC of PhilFIDA Regional Office XIII.

They were warmly received by Hon. Benjamin T. Fazon Jr., Municipal Mayor of Marihatag, together with Vice Mayor Charlito R. Lerog, the Municipal Agriculturist, and barangay captains from abaca-producing communities. Mayor Fazon expressed the municipality’s strong desire to elevate the abaca industry, while highlighting the challenges faced by farmers in production and market access.

In response, Executive Director Atienza reaffirmed PhilFIDA’s commitment to extend comprehensive assistance—including quality planting materials, technical support, training, post-harvest facilities, and linkages to national programs—underscoring that close collaboration with LGUs is vital to realizing the abaca sector’s full potential.
